About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated Teaching Assistant to join a specialist Provision Unit within a large secondary school in Southampton. This role involves supporting students with autism and additional needs, both on a 1:1 basis and within small group settings.

You will play a key part in helping students regulate, access learning, and develop the confidence and skills needed to engage successfully in the wider school environment. The Provision Unit offers a structured, nurturing space for students who require additional support before transitioning into mainstream lessons.

This position begins in January and will continue until July, with the school keen to offer a permanent contract to the right candidate.

About the School

The school is rated “Good” and is well-regarded for its inclusive ethos and strong pastoral support. The Provision Unit is staffed by a committed SEND team who work closely with teachers, parents, and external professionals to ensure every student receives the support they need.

Class sizes within the unit are small—typically up to 7 students—allowing for personalised, focused intervention tailored to each learner’s needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 support to students with autism and additional needs
  • Assist small groups in accessing lessons, structured tasks, and interventions
  • Adapt learning materials and approaches to meet individual needs

  • Encourage independence, confidence, and social development
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, and support staff to deliver personalised learning plans
  • Monitor and record progress accurately and consistently
  • Promote a calm, inclusive, and supportive learning environment

Requirements

  • Experience supporting young people with autism or additional needs (school or care setting)
  • Strong understanding of autism, ADHD, and associated learning or behavioural needs
  • Patient, empathetic, and resilient approach
  • Excellent communication skills with students, staff, and parents
  • Knowledge of safeguarding and confidentiality procedures
  • Enhanced DBS check (support available if needed)

Benefits

  • Competitive daily rate (£88–£100 depending on experience)
  • Full-time hours within a supportive and welcoming team
  • Access to de-escalation and positive behaviour training
  • Opportunities for ongoing professional development
  • Contributory pension scheme
  • The chance to make a meaningful impact on the lives of secondary-aged students with autism
